Changes

Performace Differences

I currently don't have a good benchmark. As soon as I find one I will update this section. I need a program that causes X events, performs math calls and aalways does the same thing.

Installation Steps

Upgradeing from 4.0

  1. Download the base RPM packages
  2. Uninstall the old RPM packages
  3. Install the base RPM packages in the following order
  4. Download and install the optional packages

Upgradeing from 2.2-0

  1. Download the base RPM packages
  2. Install the new base RPM package
  3. Download and install the optional packages

Downloading

EM86 v2.2-1 may be downloaded from the following sites.

ftp://ftp.alphalinux.org/Linux-Alpha/em86/
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/em86/
ftp://ftp.metalab.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/emulators/em86/

Kernel Patches

The later versions of 2.0.x and all of 2.2.x and 2.3.x no longer require kernel patches to run EM86. Don't forget to turn on EM86 or/and MISC binary support in the kernel when compiling the kernel.

Indiviual RPM Package Overvies

em86-0.2-1.alpha.rpm This is the actual EM86 executable.
em86-libc-x86-2.2-0.noarch.rpm These are x86-based utilities and libraries that are also a part of EM86. These include ldconfig86, ldd86,and libc-thunk.so.
em86-libc-base-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm These are the x86 shared libaries needed to run the most common applications (e.g. libc.so, libm.so...)
em86-libc-X11-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm You must install this if you intend to run any X-based applications.
em86-libc-ImageMagick-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm Install this if you are running any applications that use the callable ImageMagick interface.
em86-libc-binutils-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm These libraries are needed by some development tools.
em86-libc-f2c-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm This package contain runtime libraries needed by programs built with the Fortran-to-C (f2c) translators.
em86-libc-p2c-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm This package contain runtime libraries needed by programs built with the Pascal-to-C (p2c) translators.
em86-libc-libgr-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm This package contains libraries needed by some programs to decode different graphic file formats (FBM, JPG, PBM, PGM, PNM, PPM, RLE, TIFF).
em86-libc-libpng-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm This package contains libpng.so, needed by some programs to decode PNG graphics files.
em86-libc-svgalib-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm SVGA graphics libraries, for graphics without X windows. Tell you the truth, I have not tested SVGA applications and I don't know if they'll work or not.
em86-libc-tcltk-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm Libraries needed by applications written with the TCL and TK toolkits.
em86-libc-xview-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm Libraries needed by applications written with the xview toolkit.
em86-libc-misc-libs-2.2-0.noarch.rpm Miscellaneous libraries that did not seem to fit in any other category: libncp.so, libexpect.so, libmh.so, libsnmp.so
